Your Execellency, I am pleased to accept the Letters of Credence accrediting you as Ambassador of the Kingdom of The Netherlands to the Co-operative Republic of Guyana.

I congratulate you on your appointment. I welcome you to Georgetown. I ask that convey to His Majesty, King Willem-Alexander my wishes for his personal well-being and for the prosperity of the people of The Netherlands.

Excellency, as you have pointed out, Guyana and The Netherlands share bonds of history. The names of many of our streets, villages and townships are testament to our Dutch heritage.

Guyana attaches great importance to the development of strong and cordial ties with The Netherlands with which it established diplomatic relations in May 1970. Our relationship is founded on mutual respect for each other’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, mutual non-interference in each other’s internal affairs, cooperation for mutual benefit, respect for treaties and international law and the maintenance of regional peace and security.

Your Excellency, our countries share a common committment to respecting international law as the basis for ensuring peace and as a pillar of our foreign policies. We embrace international cooperation as an integral part of international development.

Guyana, in the regard, expresses its appreciation for the technical assistance provided by the Government of The Netherlands, in the fields of civil engineering, flood-risk management and hydraulics.

As you are aware, Guyana is moving towards the establishment of a ‘green’ state – one that will place increasing emphasis on the protection of our environment, the preservation of our biodiversity, the provision of eco-tourism and eco-educational services and the promotion of renewable energy and practical measures to ensure climate adaptation.

Excellency, you’ve already remarked that Guyana, like The Netherlands, is a low-lying, coastal state. We too are conscious of the peril of rising sea levels and extreme weather as a consequence of global warming. We look forward to continued cooperation with The Netherlands in promoting climate adapation and in the development of climate-resilient infrastructure, particularly during your tenure as Ambassador.

I wish you every success in fulfilling your mandate as Ambassador of The Netherlands to Guyana and I assure you of the support of my government in the discharge of your duties. Welcome.
