Georgetown, Guyana – (March 10, 2016) President David Granger, this morning, met with Germany’s Ambassador to Guyana, His Excellency Lutz Hermann Gorgens, at the Ministry of the Presidency, during which discussions were held on a number of local and global issues.
Ambassador Lutz informed President Granger that the German Embassy will be hosting a special reception in honour of Guyana’s 50th Independence Anniversary, as well as the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. There will also be a lecture by a professor from the University of Cologne, Germany.
Guyana and the Federal Republic of Germany established formal diplomatic relations in September 1966, shortly after Guyana gained its Independence in May of that year. Since then, the two nations have collaborated in a number of areas, particularly as it relates to forest preservation and climate change within the framework of the Caribbean Renewable Energy Development Programme, which started in 2004.
The Ambassador also informed President Granger of the arrival of a German delegation from the Frankfurt Zoological Society, a non-governmental organisation, to discuss actions for wildlife preservation in southern Guyana. A team from the German Cooperation Agency, which is executing a project in partnership with CARICOM, is also expected in Guyana shortly.
Additionally, in April, a delegation from the German Development Bank (Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau – KfW) will be visiting Guyana to discuss Phase III of the Guyana Protected Areas Project (GPAS).
