Georgetown, Guyana – (March 29, 2018) As is customary at Easter time, President David Granger’s kite-distribution exercise is underway and today, hundreds of children from Pomeroon-Supenaam (Region Two) got the opportunity to meet the Head of State and received specially-designed kites. The Head of State was assisted by Minister of Social Cohesion, Ms. Amna Ally and Minister within the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, Ms. Annette Ferguson.
President Granger spoke of the significance of Easter, which he described as the most important festival in Christianity. He explained that during the period of Lent, Christians reflect on the suffering that Christ endured and observe a forty-day period of fasting and sacrifice. The period is culminated on Easter Sunday in celebration of the resurrection of Jesus.
The tradition of kite-flying as a part of Easter observances is, however, a uniquely Guyanese tradition. The President said that every Guyanese adult has fond childhood kite-flying memories. “Today, we are celebrating young people and I come to meet these young children and give them these kites so that on Easter Monday we can all participate in that Guyanese tradition of kite-flying… Nowhere else in the Caribbean do people fly kites at Easter time,” the President said.
Turning to the residents, who were gathered at the Anna Regina market tarmac, the President said that festivals like Easter bring together Guyanese of all backgrounds. “This shows you how, in Guyana, there is unity in diversity and today I have not come as a partisan President. I have come to you as a people’s President to share these kites to children of all backgrounds here in the Pomeroon-Supenaam Region,” he said.
The kite-distribution exercise continues tomorrow along the East Coast of Demerara and on the Linden-Soesdyke Highway.
