Georgetown, Guyana – (May 19, 2016) Work is moving apace for the establishment of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Centre of Excellence for which a Memorandum of Understanding was recently signed between the Governments of Guyana and India.
Minister of State, Mr. Joseph Harmon, Minister of Public Telecommunications, Mrs. Catherine Hughes and Indian High Commissioner to Guyana, His Excellency Venkatachalam Mahalingam, today, visited the proposed site for the Centre of Excellence at the National Data Management Building at the University of Guyana’s Turkeyen Campus.
Also present during the site visit were Advisor on E-Governance and Head of the E-Government Unit, Mr. Floyd Levi, Training Coordinator of the E-Government Unit, Ms. Kim Lawrence, Director of Policy and Training, Mr. Malcom Williams and General Manager of the National Data Management Authority (NDMA), Mr. Godfrey Proctor.
The Ministers, High Commissioner and team examined the architectural designs and drawings for the proposed centre. Works are expected to be completed by the end of August 2016. They also discussed the use and size of the offices, floor space and the make up of each classroom.
Minister Hughes expressed Guyana’s gratitude to the High Commissioner and the Republic of India, noting that the project is an exciting one that will boost Guyana’s Information Technology (IT) sector.
The Centre will provide training for public sector ICT professionals to ensure the availability of a highly skilled ICT workforce, equipped with the requisite expertise to meet the increasingly complex demands of the public and private sectors.
