Georgetown, Guyana – (April 20, 2016) President David Granger, today, signed the Book of Condolence, which was opened at the Embassy of the Republic of Chile in Brummel Place, Stabroek on the passing of Former President of Chile, H.E. Patricio Aylwin Azócar.
President Granger signed the Book of Condolence in the presence of the Chilean Ambassador to Guyana, H.E. Claudio Rachel Rojas and said, “It is an honour to come to pay tribute to a great statesman [and] great leader on the South American continent.”

President Aylwin, Chile’s first elected president after the bloody 17-year Pinochet dictatorship, led that country from 1990 to 1994 and is remembered for initiating direct municipal elections, the first of which were held in June 1992. The former President passed away yesterday. He was 97 years old.
