Georgetown, Guyana – (September 18, 2019) First Lady, Mrs. Sandra Granger, this afternoon, awarded 30 children who participated in her ‘Buxton Youth Development Initiative’, at a simple ceremony held at the Friendship Primary School.
In addition to the book vouchers which were presented to the children, the First Lady also donated 72 backpacks to the East Coast Demerara school.
The Grade Two to Six students attended the remedial classes at the Friendship Primary School, three times per week for one year.
Speaking at the award ceremony which was held in the school’s auditorium, the First Lady said she was proud to see that a student from the remedial classes had gained a place at the President’s College at the last sitting of the National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) examination. She said that this achievement meant that the extra classes are definitely having a positive impact on the students.
“I want to thank the parents who have seen the value of this project and have encouraged their children to come to the classes because we are beginning to see the results…I was very happy yesterday when I was at Lusignan and the Head Teacher reported that 70 per cent of the kids had passed for list ‘A’ and ‘B’ schools,” Mrs. Granger said.
Head Teacher of the Friendship Primary School, Ms. Yulanda Adams Blair and Coordinator of the Buxton Youth Development Programme, Mr. Deon Abrams also attended the ceremony.
