Georgetown, Guyana – (September 18, 2019) First Lady, Mrs. Sandra Granger, today, underscored the importance of education in paving the way for women to take control of their own lives in her address at the Opening Plenary of the Empowerment Leadership Conference, which is being at the Arthur Chung Convention Centre, Turkeyen, East Coast Demerara.
The two-day event is entitled “PowHERful: transition from inspiration to action”.
The First Lady emphasised that education will open many doors for women’s development, inclusive of employment opportunities, better economic status and confidence boosting.
“It is through education that she gains employment and moves forward and upward in her chosen career. It is through education that she improves her economic viability and that of her family. It is through education that she gains confidence in herself and empowers herself,” Mrs. Granger said.
The First Lady also said that in keeping with the theme, she started thinking about successful women in various fields and found that “there is no single formula for success. Rather, the key for each woman is to find and fuel the passion in herself. This demands a level of self-confidence. Once she does that, she sets her goals and plans how she will achieve her objectives”.
She stressed that such an achievement is no easy task. “There will be many challenges along the way, from family, from partners, from friends, from co-workers and even from total strangers,” she said before expressing the belief that the biggest obstacle for women fulfilling their dreams is the lack of self-confidence.
The First Lady used the occasion to call on women “to step out of the boxes in which they are placed [and] to follow and fulfil their dreams”.
Meanwhile, United States Ambassador to Guyana, Ms. Sarah-Ann Lynch underscored the important role women play in the developing society.
She said, “It is the power of women that will tip the scale to a Guyana and Caribbean, that is prosperous, well governed and secure… so it’s not enough to just talk about empowering women. If you’re serious about, political, economic and security of the future, women need to be involved in every aspect of shaping the world they live in.”
Also present were President of WeLead Caribbean, Ms. Abbigale Loncke, Executive Vice President and Cofounder of Schure – Media Group, Ms. Yvette Noel- Schure and ANSA McAl’s Country Head- Guyana, Ms. Beverley Harper.
