Georgetown, Guyana – (October 23, 2015) The Director and members of the Transparency Institute of Guyana Incorporated, met with the President, His Excellency Brigadier David Granger, and discussed means of collaboration, to tackle any incidence of corruption, within state agencies. The team visited the Ministry of the Presidency and met with the President and Minister of Social Cohesion, Amna Ally, earlier today.
Those who attended the meeting included the President of the organisation, Calvin Bernard, Director, Christopher Ram, Ayana Mc Alman, First Vice President, Troy Thomas, Member, Aruna Budhram, Second Vice President, and Compton Meerabux, Director.
Following the meeting, Christopher Ram, in an invited comment, said that while the engagement was intended to be a courtesy call, a number of issues were raised with the President. “It was a very open and very cordial discussion on a wide range of topics including, corruption, of course, and the ranking of Guyana on the Corruption Perception Index,” Ram said.
He added that corruption was raised with the Head of State, since it is something the organisation is very concerned about and it has implications for investment. “We talked about corruption in the public service; we talked about some of the legislation, the Police Complaints Authority. The President expressed his own views on the Public Service College, which he thinks is going to go some way in dealing with the issue of corruption,” Ram explained.
Noting his satisfaction with the outcome of the meeting, Ram said the President has committed to facilitating another meeting with the Minister of Governance, Raphael Trotman and the Minister of Legal Affairs. This meeting Ram explained will allow the President and his team peruse the points raised by his organisation, with the aim of addressing the issues.
