Georgetown, Guyana – (October 14, 2015) Minister of Governance, Raphael Trotman, today, assured that the Government has a plan of action to buffer the effects of the current el niño weather conditions. The Minister made this announcement at a post-Cabinet press briefing, held at the Ministry of the Presidency.
The Minister explained that while the Government will continue to monitor and make interventions as it becomes necessary for residents along the coast, it is the residents of the hinterland, whose plight is more acute.
“There was some water in Region Nine, but I think for hundreds of years the water has been allowed to run off the mountains and run into the rivers; so now we are looking at having some lakes developed and the possibility of supplying wind generated pumps to pump water from the lakes and wells that are expected to be sunk,” the Minister stated.
Minister of State, Joseph Harmon recently led a team to Region Nine, where they held discussions with residents of Surama, Aranaputa, Kwatamang and Rupertee and members of the North Rupununi District Development Board (NRDDB), on ways in which water could be retained during this period of drought.
During that engagement, residents echoed the call for more wells and deeper wells to store larger volumes of water. Minister Harmon informed the residents that the government will be looking to put short and medium term solutions in place for immediate relief, and will craft a long term plan to mitigate the situation in the years to come.
