Trafficking in Persons (TIP), deteriorating roads and other infrastructure in mining districts and the need for more exemptions and benefits for stakeholders in the mining sector were some of the issues raised by members of the Guyana Women Miners’ Association (GWMA) during a meeting with President David Granger today at the Ministry of the Presidency.
Minister of Governance, Raphael Trotman, Minister of Business, Dominic Gaskin and Minister within the Ministry of Social Protection, Simona Broomes were also part of the meeting.
Acting President of the Association, Urika Primus pointed out that miners are facing serious difficulties with the state of the roads especially given the current rainy season and highlighted the need for the development of a new mining areas away from those that have already been ‘mined out’.
Primus said that the Association looks forward to having greater cooperation with the Government and the relevant sub-agencies that support the mining sector.
The team from the Association included: Head of the TIP Unit, Marina Charles, First Vice-President of the GWMA, Donna Charles, Acting President, Urika Primus, and executive members, Grace Prince, Donna Scott, Dana Jones, Marion Sheppard, and Stephanie Miguel.
