His Excellency President Dr Irfaan Ali announced that his Government will invest in storage facilities and transportation infrastructure to support rice farming activities in Region Two, where one of the highest levels of rice production has been recorded.

The President made the disclosure during his address at a public meeting with residents of Lima Sands, Essequibo Coast.

“We’ve invested more than $10bn and let me say this to our farmers, especially our rice farmers, we are committing to you, and you know you can trust us, that we will do everything to ensure that your rice farming is viable and profitable.”

The  President also stated that ” the Government will also invest more in terms of input stabilisation so that we can keep the cost of production low, increasing your profitability and viability.”

Moreover, he told the gathering that the Government is dedicated to the development and expansion of the region’s economy.

He said that with the construction of new roadways across the country, there will be interconnectivity to support the region’s agricultural and tourism sectors.

Additionally, he said that contracts will soon be awarded for the construction of the remaining phase of the Lima Sands community roads.

He disclosed that their requests for street lights, a community bus, a treated water facility, and a new community centre are in the evaluation stage but will be provided.

President Ali also announced that contracts for the expansion of the Lima Primary School and upgraded health centre are already signed, and work will commence soon.

Senior Minister within the Office of the President with responsibility for Finance and Public Service, the Honourable Dr Ashni Singh, along with senior Government officials and Regional Chair Vilma Da Silva, were also at the meeting.
