Georgetown, Guyana—(March 21, 2025) His Excellency President Dr Irfaan Ali highlighted the growing role of the Guyana Defence Force in both national security and nation-building, during the commissioning of a new GDF state-of-the-art hangar today at the Eugene F Correia International Airport in Ogle on the East Coast of Demerara.
In his address, President Ali emphasised that the country’s defence strategy is closely linked to its broader national development objectives.
He noted that the GDF is not only tasked with securing the nation’s borders but also with supporting the country’s economic and social growth through disaster response, humanitarian aid, and the protection of vital national resources.
The newly opened hangar was described as a critical investment in the GDF’s Air Corps with its potential to enabling faster, more effective responses to a variety of national needs.
“Our military must be ready: not just to defend our borders, but to assist in times of disaster, respond to emergencies, and contribute to national development. Whether it is delivering aid in times of flooding, assisting communities in times of crisis, or safeguarding our natural resources, the Guyana Defence Force will stand as a strong and solid rock that secures our country and our people,” the President explained.
Between 2021 and 2024, the Government invested over $400 million in training and development for the GDF’s Air Corps, with a similar investment of $400 million earmarked for 2025. These investments form part of a broader strategy to modernise the military’s capabilities, which includes the introduction of a cutting-edge drone programme designed to monitor Guyana’s vast Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and borders.
President Ali also emphasised the importance of ensuring that those who serve in the military are supported throughout their careers, with long-term benefits and career pathways that offer stability. He reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring that the men and women of the GDF have the resources, tools, and support they need to excel in their roles.
“We are not arming ourselves for aggression. We are arming ourselves for protection. We are not building a Defence Force for war. We are building a Defence Force for resilience.”
The President also acknowledged the vital role the GDF plays in humanitarian efforts, particularly during national emergencies such as flooding or natural disasters. Through its air and ground operations, the GDF is often first on the scene, providing aid and support to affected communities across the country.
President Ali also reinforced the connection between defence, security, and national development, stating that the government’s investment in the GDF is an investment in the nation’s future.
“Every pound spent on strengthening our Defence Force is a pound spent on safeguarding our economic potential, ensuring that investors have confidence in our stability, and in protecting the very foundation upon which development is built.”
