— Says Government aims to develop plan to expedite land titling process
Berbice, Guyana—(February 05, 2024) His Excellency Dr Irfaan Ali said that families in Cotton Tree, West Coast Berbice and thousands of others across the country, will now be empowered and their ability for wealth creation and prosperity will increase with the procurement of their land titles.
During the feature address at a land title distribution exercise in the community this afternoon, the Head of State explained that the housing drive by his Government is part of a holistic plan to empower tens of thousands of residents in the region.
“This process will allow the empowerment of families, the ability for wealth creation and building prosperity within the communities…this title is a symbol of economic and financial empowerment because if you take this title, you now have a legal value of your property.”
The President explained that the distribution of titles would solve a problem that has existed for decades. When resolved, more than 4,500 titles will be distributed to residents in the region. This, he said, will impact not only the title holders, but their immediate families, which on average will equate to more than 18,000 Guyanese.
“It is now the self-satisfaction that you are not passing on an inherited problem to the next generation and to your children. So now you’re not passing on the burden of resolving this issue. You’re passing on a title to the next generation.”
He explained to the residents that with their titles, they will now be able to access funds from financial institutions for resources to empower themselves and their families.
“And what it does automatically is open up the opportunity for more than 4,500 persons to have access to capital that can move you right up to the middle class and create the ability for all of you to become entrepreneurs. That is the inherent benefit that this title offers you and that is why it is so critically important that you get these titles.”
Expediting the process
The President also announced that he has tasked the Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, the Honourable Anil Nandlall to work on legal avenues to expedite the title distribution process.
To ensure this, the President said his Government will provide all the resources to finance the mechanism.
He also announced that the Attorney General will be examining the backlog in cases within the land court system to bring relief to residents who are waiting a long time for finality on their cases.
Other developments
President Ali also spoke about other development works that are slated for communities within the region. This, the President noted, will positively impact the overall development of the communities and the values of properties.
“When you look at the investment the Government is making, the future value of your property will be, in some cases, 50% more than what the current value is.”
Minister Nandlall and other government and regional officials were also at the event.
