Georgetown, Guyana – (July 17, 2020) His Excellency, David Granger, President of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana is saddened at the death of Guyanese archaeologist and artist, Dr. George Simon, AA.
Dr. Simon, 73, died in Spain where he was residing on Wednesday, July 15, 2020 following a prolonged period of illness.
Dr. Simon, considered one of Guyana’s greatest artists and archaeologists, was born at the St Cuthbert’s Mission. He was known for his efforts to develop opportunities for Amerindian artists in Guyana.
He was also the recipient of a number of prestigious awards, including the Golden Arrowhead of Achievement, which he received in 1998 and the Anthony N Sabga Caribbean Award for Excellence in 2012.
President Granger extends heartfelt condolences to his immediate family members, relatives and friends.
