I am pleased to accept the Letters of Credence accrediting you as Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to the Co-operative Republic of Guyana.
I congratulate you on your appointment and welcome you to Guyana. I ask that you convey to His Excellency President Frank-Walter Steinmeier my best wishes for his personal well-being and for the continued progress and prosperity of the people of the Federal Republic of Germany.
Guyana and Germany established diplomatic relations over five decades ago, on 2nd September 1966.Our relationship is founded on mutual respect for each other’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, mutual non- interference in each other’s internal affairs, cooperation for mutual benefit, respect for treaties and international law and the maintenance of regional peace and security.
Guyana is cognizant of Germany’s continued efforts in advancing the protection of the environment and addressing climate change. Guyana has also placed these issues as high priorities on our policy agenda and is moving towards the establishment of a “Green State”.
This ‘Green State’ will place emphasis on the protection of our environment, the preservation of our biodiversity, the promotion of the use of renewable energy and the adoption of practical measures to ensure climate adaptation.
Guyana is a low-lying coastal state. It is vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate change and to global warming. Rising sea levels have damaged our sea defences and destroyed sections of the coastal mangrove forest. The sea water has invaded our agricultural lands.
Guyana, in this regard, has welcomed Germany’s cooperation in the protection of our forests and the establishment of protected areas.
Guyana is appreciative of Germany’s support for Natural Resource and Environmental management. Guyana welcomes, also Germany’s economic and technical support in the fields of public health and public education.
I look forward to the further enhancement of our bilateral relations.
I am confident that our shared commitment to overcome the challenges of climate change will foster stronger relations for our two countries and fulfil our global obligations.
I assure you of the full support of my Government in the discharge of your duties as Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Cooperative Republic of Guyana and I extend my best wishes to you as you fulfill your mandate.
