I am pleased to accept the Letters of Credence accrediting you as Ambassador of the European Union to the Co-operative Republic of Guyana. I congratulate you on your appointment and welcome you to Guyana.
I ask that you convey to His Excellency Jean-Claude Junker, President of the European Commission, my best wishes for his personal well-being and for the continued progress and prosperity of the European Union.
Guyana values its partnership with the European Union. Diplomatic relations were established in 1975 and are premised on the common principles of equality, mutual respect, the rule of law and tolerance.
Guyana has benefited substantially from the EU’s development cooperation programmes in the fields of agriculture, sugar-cultivation, education, training, housing, public health, public and private sector development, coastal zone management and climate change.
Guyana and the EU have collaborated within the ambit of the successive Lomé Conventions and the current African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States: ACP-EU Cotonou Partnership Agreement. These arrangements establish a platform on which to construct a new generation of partnership for their mutual benefit. These agreements will assist in the realization of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, including the Sustainable Development Goals to which Guyana is unequivocally committed.
Guyana’s Green State Development Strategy embodies its commitment to cohesive and sustainable development. The ‘green state’ will place emphasis on the protection of our environment, the preservation of our biodiversity, the promotion of renewable energy and practical measures to ensure climate adaptation.
Guyana will continue in its efforts to provide increased access to modern, clean and affordable energy and to boost its efforts to address climate adaptation, notwithstanding the establishment of an oil and gas sector.
Guyana remains strongly committed to building upon our longstanding relationship and shared commitments with the EU in the Post Cotonou period.
We assure you of the full support and continued collaboration of our Government in the discharge of your duties as Ambassador of the European Union to the Cooperative Republic of Guyana. I extend my best wishes to you for a successful tenure.
