Several women began a three-day course to be certified in First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) as part of an initiative by First Lady, Mrs Sandra Granger to provide skilled caregivers for the elderly.
The First Lady told the Government Information Agency (GINA) that the three-day session is part of completing a care for the elderly training programme which began last year.
“I saw a need for people who should be qualified to care for our seniors…so I thought it was a very important niche that we could fill,” Mrs Granger said.
The First Aid and CPR training is being facilitated by the Guyana Red Cross Society at its headquarters in Kingston, Georgetown. The course will see the women being certified following a theoretical and practical exam.
Once certified, the First Lady said she hoped the training would facilitate gainful employment for the women. “We would like to take that to the Ministry (of Social Protection) and say here are our fully certified caregivers,” Mrs Granger said.
This is the initial batch in the training of caregivers for the elderly which is part of the First Lady’s empowering women initiative.
