Georgetown, Guyana – (September 4, 2015) Minister of State, Joseph Harmon has declared that the Government of Guyana is prepared to defend its decision to relieve the former Chief Executive Officer of the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo), Dr. Raj Singh of his duties, in a  Court of law, should the need arise.

Minister Harmon made the statement this morning at the post Cabinet press briefing, which was held at the Ministry of the Presidency, after reports surfaced that the former CEO was preparing to take the Government to Court, since he claimed that benefits were owed to him.

The Minister of State told media operatives that if the former CEO makes good his threats to take the State to Court, the Government will respond and will provide its reasons for taking such a step.

“This is a position on which the Government will be happy to go to Court for if that is the Direction the former CEO wants to take. As a lawyer myself, I know that when you have claims to a matter, there are always counter claims and sometimes the counter claim is bigger than the claim itself. So the CEO can proceed in the manner, which best suits him but be assured that the State will respond in a firm manner on this matter,” he said.

He noted that the Commission of Inquiry (CoI) which was launched into the operations of the Guyana Sugar Corporation upon its assumption of office, revealed discrepancies, which the Government could not allow to continue.

“There have been discoveries of several infractions of the laws, of the regulations and even of his own contract and you will have more of them coming out from the commission of inquiry. People are speaking up because the head is no longer there and they are saying things that you are finding to be the tip of the iceberg,” Minister Harmon told the media corps.
