Georgetown, Guyana – (October 1, 2019) Minister of State, Mrs. Dawn Hastings-Williams, this afternoon, presented 85 food hampers to residents of flood-affected Zeelugt and visited communities Anna Catherina and Den Amstel, West Coast Demerara, Essequibo Islands – West Demerara (Region Three) to do some further assessment of the flood related damages.
The Minister was accompanied by representatives of the Civil Defence Commission and Region three Regional Information Officer, Mr. Ganesh Mahipaul.
Minister Hastings-Williams that during a meeting with residents of Zeelugt on Monday she discovered that several of them were without food items and she endeavoured to respond speedily to their needs.
“Today I am back here as we promised. We promised that we are going to help them because some of them, their food items are soaked and it’s not palatable for them,” she said.
The Minister also handed over two bags of chicken feed to a family in Anna Catherina who lost 300 chickens during the flood. She then met with residents of Den Amstel to get a first-hand look at the damages there.
Residents of Zeelugt said that they were thankful for the timely intervention. “We are thankful that we got this little assistance because the disaster really shook us up. It was about four days we were under water,” said Mr. Pragld Ramkissoon a resident of Zeelugt North.
The Minister assured that the Government along with the CDC will continue to assess the damages and assist where necessary.
