Georgetown, Guyana – (September 25, 2019) President David Granger, this morning, accepted the Letters of Credence from Mr. Ralechate Lincoln Mokose, accrediting him as the new High Commissioner of the Kingdom of Lesotho to Guyana at an accreditation ceremony held at the Ministry of the Presidency. This is the country’s first such appointment of a High Commissioner to Guyana.
In his remarks, President Granger noted that Guyana and Lesotho have enjoyed cordial relations since the two countries established diplomatic ties 40 years ago on August 25, 1979. He said the two countries’ relations are founded on mutual respect for each other’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, mutual non-interference in each other’s internal affairs, cooperation for mutual benefit, respect for treaties and international law and the maintenance of regional peace and security.
“Guyana is keen on discussing and developing ways in which we can improve relations between our countries, especially in the fields of trade, investment, agriculture and energy. Guyana and Lesotho became independent in 1966. We have worked to develop our countries and improve the lives of our people. Our countries share common views and are consistent advocates on various global issues such as maintaining international peace and security and adapting to the threat of climate change. We have worked closely at the multilateral level under the auspices of the Commonwealth, the United Nations and the Non- Aligned Movement,” President Granger said.
The Head of State noted that Guyana is transitioning towards becoming a ‘green state’, which will see more emphasis being placed on the protection of our environment, the preservation of our biodiversity, the promotion of renewable energy and the adoption of practical measures to ensure climate adaptation.
Guyana welcomes the opportunity to enhance its efforts at collaboration with the Kingdom of Lesotho, the President said.
“We look forward to sharing experiences in building climate-resilient economies and collaborating on important developmental issues such as education, the environment, the economy, the eradication of poverty and the improvement of the livelihood of our people. I wish you every success in the discharge of your duties as High Commissioner. I assure you of the full support of my government,” President Granger said.
Meanwhile, High Commissioner Mokose, in his remarks, said his country is interested in strengthening the bilateral relations between the two countries in areas such as water, environment, education, agriculture, energy, trade and investment, transport and tourism.
“Lesotho and Guyana are two small geographically distant countries. Being the first ever High Commissioner of Lesotho to Guyana since our established relations, I feel it’s a great privilege to me to be accorded an opportunity to kick start our bilateral cooperation,” he said.
