Georgetown, Guyana – (May 25, 2019) As Guyana prepares to celebrate the 53rd Anniversary of its Independence, President David Granger, pursuant to Article 188 (1) (a) of the Constitution of Guyana, has granted a free pardon to Ms. Bibi Parjohn, who is currently serving a 60-month sentence and Ms. Unique Hope who is serving a six-month sentence, both at the New Amsterdam Prison. The Presidential Pardon takes effect on May 26, 2019.
Ms. Parjohn, 40, was incarcerated for the larceny of cash while Ms. Hope, 30, was incarcerated for forgery.
Last December, the Head of State granted Presidential Pardons to three female prisoners who were all serving sentences at the New Amsterdam Prison. Those Presidential Pardons took effect on December 20, 2018.
The three female inmates released were Ms. Joanna Beckles, who was charged with forgery and sentenced to nine months in prison; Ms. Felicia Henry, who was charged with larceny of cash and sentenced to 18 months in prison and Ms. Keysha Gibbs, who was charged with break and enter and larceny and sentenced to 36 months in prison.
Article 188 (1) (a) of the Constitution states that “The President may grant to any person concerned in or convicted of any offence under the laws of Guyana, a pardon, either free or subject to lawful conditions”.
The conditions outlined in the Constitution of Guyana relative to Presidential Pardons were met.
