Georgetown, Guyana – (May 22, 2019) President David Granger, today, accepted the Letters of Credence from Her Excellency Marichu Mauro, accrediting her as the new non-resident Ambassador of the Republic of the Philippines to Guyana.
Speaking at the accreditation ceremony at the Ministry of the Presidency, the Head of State said Guyana looks forward to improving cooperation with the Philippines, particularly in the fields of agriculture, commerce, environment, fisheries and marine development. He also noted that Guyana welcomes the opportunity to develop its bilateral and multilateral relations further, and anticipates the strengthening of the two countries’ relations during her tenure as non-resident Ambassador.
Further, the President said Guyana is in transition towards becoming a ‘green’ state, one which will see more emphasis being placed on the protection of our environment; the preservation of our biodiversity; the promotion of renewable energy and practical measures to ensure climate resilience.
“We have enjoyed multilateral collaboration within the United Nations and the Non-Aligned Movement. Our shared concerns about the adverse effects of climate change provide a platform for deepening our multilateral collaboration. Guyana and the Philippines have founded their relations on the bases of mutual respect for each other’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, mutual non-interference in each other’s internal affairs, cooperation for mutual benefit, respect for treaties and international law and the maintenance of regional peace and security. Our countries share a common interest in the peaceful settlement of disputes and in ensuring respect for settled territorial and maritime boundaries,” President Granger said.
Meanwhile, Ambassador Mauro, in her remarks, said the Philippines is interested in fortifying its relationship with Guyana particularly in the areas of economic cooperation and trade.
“The Philippines Consulate here in Georgetown is very active in pursuing our bilateral cooperation. The trade relations between the Philippines and Guyana has been very minimal, but we hope that we can work at improving our relations especially in the area of investments. There is a company who is interested in investing in Guyana. The Philippines Sugar Producers can also do with investments in the Skeldon sugar estates. This is something we can further discuss. My Government admires Guyana’s expertise in Hydro-electrical technology and its ability to improve local communities so we are interested in pursuing a cooperation project in this area,” the Ambassador said.
Guyana and the Philippines established diplomatic ties in September 2008.
