Georgetown, Guyana – (October 28, 2018) First Lady, Mrs. Sandra Granger, this morning, called on both men and women at the Ministry of Public Health’s Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Walk to get screened for cancer as early detection and treatment can save many lives. The First Lady, who was joined by Prime Minister, Mr. Moses Nagamootoo, his wife Mrs. Sita Nagamootoo; Ministers of Public Health, Ms. Volda Lawrence and Dr. Karen Cummings, led the walk with 14-year-old cancer survivor, Ms. Makayla Belgrave.
“I am giving my support and want to encourage both males and females to get tested early,” Mrs. Granger said.
Scores of persons turned out for the event, marching though the city streets chanting “Early detection saves lives” after departing from Parade Ground from around 06:00 hours. The group marched along Waterloo Street, turning east into Church Street, north into Vlissengen Road, west into Lamaha Street, south into Camp Street and west into Middle Street, concluding at their starting point.
In an invited comment, Ms. Celeste Belgrave, Makayla’s mother said that she believes that having the First Lady and Ministers, particular Minister Lawrence, who is also a survivor, join hands with her daughter as they marched through the streets has lifted her spirits. “Ms. Volda Lawrence knows her since she was a baby…she is one of the persons that assisted us with Makayla’s health bills even before she became Minister, and I see the walk is boosting Makayla up a bit because she is smiling all the way along,” she said.
