Georgetown, Guyana – (July 5, 2018) First Lady Mrs. Sandra Granger, today, attended the launch of a greenhouse project, which is being spearheaded by the Green Life Floral Co-op Society, established by a group of graduates of the 16th Self-Reliance and Success in Business Workshop. The opening ceremony was held at the Cummings Park Multi-Purpose Centre, Sophia.
Mrs. Granger in her remarks, said that it is always a joyous occasion to witness a success story materialising from workshops facilitated by her Office and commended the Co-op Society for facilitating the process. She also informed the gathering of her intention to facilitate more such workshops in the Cummings Lodge community. “I am very happy to see Green Life Floral Co-op Society beginning to mobilise … because it is not just a nursery and a greenhouse, but you are also looking at sustainable livelihood…,” she said.
The First Lady also thanked Minister of Social Protection, Ms. Amna Ally and her Ministry for their continued support of the Self-Reliance and Success in Business Workshops and for supporting the development of the Green Life Floral Co-op Society Green House project through the Sustainable Livelihood and Entrepreneurial Development (SLED) Project.
Ms. Roxanne Glasgow, Chairman of Green Life Floral Co-op Society thanked the First Lady for organising the workshop last year, which helped to empower women within the community and noted that the Green House project is in keeping with President David Granger’s vision of green development. “We want to help our community to eat healthier… because beautiful surroundings bring up a beautiful healthy society,” she said.
Ms. Shevonna Chisum, Treasurer of the Co-op said that the establishment of the Green House project was a team effort and spoke of plans to upgrade and expand operations. “So far we have reaped and sold vegetables as well as plants, but due to the current weather there were some losses, but we have a plan to introduce more drainage and irrigation to the project,” she said.
Ms. Shelon Carmichael, a member of the Co-op Society said that this project was initially suggested during a workshop facilitated by the First Lady and its fruition is testimony to the dedication and commitment of the members of the Co-op. She also expressed the hope that the greenhouse project will grow to benefit the people of the community.
Mr. Yohann Sanjay Pooran, Facilitator of Interweave Solutions Incorporated, Richard Allen, Member of Parliament and Community Coordinator, Ms. Andrea Marks also attended the launch.
