Georgetown, Guyana – (February 13, 2017) First Lady, Mrs. Sandra Granger, today, received a courtesy call at her office at State House from Trinidadian national, Ms. Rebekah Ali-Gouveia and Guyanese Attorney-at-law Ms. Sandria Ramnarine, who used the opportunity to introduce the work of Elpis Centre, a United Kingdom- based charity organization that also operates in Trinidad. Together, the pair will be working on coordinating a pro-family conference, which focuses on the critical role the family plays in contributing to the development of healthy and prosperous societies. The Conference is expected to be hosted in Guyana in October, 2018.
Ms. Ali-Gouveia, who is the President of the Elpis Centre and Caribbean Coordinator of the World Congress of Families, requested the engagement with the First Lady to share the plethora of work the organisation covers. Among their core areas, Elpis provides care and support to pregnant women in crises, tangible help and counselling through use of bible-based principles, quality resources and strategic partnerships. The centre also offers group sessions for specific issues such as education, sexual health, drug and alcohol issues.
The First Lady, who has been a champion for women’s empowerment, also shared her portfolio of initiatives, which is focused on empowering disenfranchised women through self-reliance workshops and other such initiatives, as well as work with teenaged mothers.
Pro-family Conference has, thus far been held in Canada, Trinidad, Bolivia, London, Kenya, Nigeria, Serbia, Moldova, Latvia, Ukraine, Russia, Georgia and Barbados.
