Georgetown, Guyana – (September 20, 2016) The final collection of books donated to a book drive hosted by the Press and Publicity Unit, Ministry of the Presidency as part of the celebrations to mark President David Granger’s 71st birth anniversary was, today, presented to the Mahaica Children’s Home and the Sisters of Mercy of Guyana.
The presentations were a culmination of a Ministry-wide book drive in July for children of the Hope Children’s Home at Enmore, East Coast Demerara. Almost 400 books, stationery and other items were presented to the home in support of President Granger’s vision to make Guyana “an education nation”.
Ms. Jasmaine Payne of the Ministry of the Presidency handed over this collection to a staff at the National Library as other library staffers look on.
These girls of the Mahaica Children’s Home were very excited to receive the collection of books and rushed to display them on their new bookcase.
Ms. Patricia December, caregiver at the Mahaica Children’s Home, and an exuberant group of girls at the home were pleased to receive the collection of books. “On behalf of the children and staff of the Mahaica Children’s Home we thank you very much for this donation…. We need some of the books right now for the children at secondary school,” she said.
Sister Judith Schmelz of the Sisters of Mercy of Guyana was also pleased to accept the donation. “I’m very happy to accept it. It’s a very generous donation,” she said. The Sisters of Mercy manage a facility that provides rehabilitative care, education and other services to girls and women, who have been rescued after having been victims of trafficking.
Books were also presented to the National Library in August.
