Georgetown, Guyana – (August 21, 2015) Minister of Public Security and Vice-President, Khemraj Ramjattan has presented draft strategic crime fighting plan to Cabinet for deliberations and approval. Minister of State, Joseph Harmon at his post-Cabinet press briefing today said that the plan entails an overall strategy to tackle the crime situation in Guyana; specifically dealing with police response and the 911 service.
“Crime is a major concern for this Administration; we have recognised that there are things which have to be done to curb that situation…the inter-agency collaboration is on-going… it is a matter that we are taking it very seriously,” the Minister said.
Meanwhile, President David Granger continues to engage heads of the various law enforcement agencies on a weekly basis. Minister Harmon said that these officials are required to submit regular reports on their preparedness to deal with crime in the 10 administrative regions.
He reminded that the Government is providing additional land, air and water resources to the police.
“You can’t always plan for certain things, what you can do is be able to respond very quickly and sometimes you have to be able to act before the action takes place so there are two levels on which you can deal with these matter and what I can say to you is that we are trying to deal with it on both levels,” The Minister assured.
The five-point plan that the Government will be rolling out focuses heavily on training of police ranks, installation of more Close Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras at strategic locations, and vehicles and equipment for law enforcement bodies.
