Georgetown, Guyana – (August 13, 2015) Minister of State, Joseph Harmon today met with China’s Ambassador to Guyana, Zhang Limin at the Ministry of the Presidency to discuss issues related to the final shipment of laptop computers under the former One Laptop Per Family (OLPF) project.
The Minister and the Ambassador also discussed the E-Governance Unit and the operationalising of the E-Governance Network. China has granted the request was made by the Government for technical support from the ICT Company Huawei to conduct testing of the operating system and to provide training for personnel.
As part of its ICT drive, Government has refashioned the OLPF programme to provide teachers, students, institutions of learning and community based organisations with laptops with a view to improving education delivery across the country. Budget 2015 has allocated the sum of $1.7B for the procurement of 9,609 laptops in this regard.
Additionally, $937M has been budgeted to continue the e-government project which will offer Guyanese easier access to vital public sector services.
