His Excellency Dr Irfaan Ali, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces said that the lives of the five Guyana Defence Force (GDF) soldiers who tragically lost their lives in a helicopter crash will always be remembered as “national heroes, whose legacy will endure for generations to come”.
The Head of State spoke at the Memorial Service for the five soldiers— Lieutenant Colonel Michael Charles, Colonel Michael Shahoud, Lieutenant Colonel Shaun Welcome, Staff Sergeant Jason Khan and Brigadier (Ret’d) Gary Beaton— who tragically lost their lives in a helicopter crash on December 8, 2023.
He underscored that the five men were on a mission to exercise the oath of office in protecting every square inch of Guyana and, by extension, every Guyanese.
“And we must never forget the period and the circumstances surrounding that period.”
Beaton, the President said, “was a towering figure in the Defence Force, known for his unwavering dedication and leadership. Throughout his illustrious career, he set a standard of excellence that inspired countless others to serve with honour and distinction”.
“Lieutenant Colonel Michael Charles, Lieutenant Colonel Michael Shahoud, and Lieutenant Colonel Sean Welcome were pillars of professionalism and expertise—men who led with both their hearts and minds, earning the respect and admiration of all who served alongside them. Warrant Officer Class 2 Jason Khan was highly skilled and professional. Warrant Officer Jason Khan was part of our military’s elite corps. His dedication, discipline, and commitment to duty reflected his character and the values instilled in every member of our Defence Force.”
