His Excellency President Dr Irfaan Ali today announced a slew of transformational projects aimed at enhancing and diversifying the economy of Orealla in Region Six (East Berbice–Corentyne).

The Head of State addressed hundreds of residents during a public meeting, where he stated that his Government would expeditiously address a number of issues currently affecting the community.

High on the agenda is the construction of a full cargo boat for Orealla and Siparuta, intended to reduce the cost for farmers transporting produce to market. “We will give you a boat with the engine, and we will pay the captain of the boat, removing that cost for you, the farmers,” the President stated.

He reminded residents that this initiative would be complemented by duty-free concessions for 150hp engines and ATVs, further supporting the reduction in transportation costs for hinterland and riverine communities.

He also announced that his Government would construct an all-weather road from New Amsterdam to the communities, and allocate resources in the next budget to build concrete roads within the communities, to be undertaken by local contractors. To complement this, the President said that his Government would provide equipment and resources to local contractors to build their capacity and capabilities.

President Ali explained that while Orealla currently receives five hours of electricity per day, using at least 15 barrels of fuel per week, his Government—while working on a long-term plan to provide 24-hour electricity—would supply half of the barrels of fuel required annually (90 barrels) from the next budget. “Not only will we be expanding the electricity, but we will take up half of the cost of that power right now.”

The President added that his Government would contract an international company to carry out a groundwater study for the two communities, to precisely identify the location of aquifers so that the villages can have a proper well and 24/7 water service.

President Ali also stated that his Government would provide the community with solar refrigeration so farmers can have cold storage capacity to preserve produce and extend its shelf life; build a childcare centre and a recreational facility for residents; and further invest in community forest organisations.

Minister within the Office of the President with responsibility for Finance and Public Service, the Honourable Dr Ashni Singh, along with other Government and regional officials, were also present at the event.
