His Excellency President Dr Irfaan Ali said the island of Wakenaam in the Essequibo River “will not be left behind” as his Government continues to put systems in place to improve the quality of life for people in every sector.
During a Cabinet Outreach to the island, he disclosed that plans are afoot for the MV Hercules to permanently ply the Wakenaam–Parika route, which is expected not only to ease transportation woes but also to support farmers in exporting their produce.
The President stated that Wakenaam will benefit from the construction of drainage and bridges, a street lighting programme, and investment in the Safe Country security surveillance system, while a new ambulance will be provided.
Additionally, he said that the island’s solar farm, set to be connected to the electricity grid in the new year, will help reduce the cost of electricity.
The Minister of Public Service, Government Efficiency and Implementation, the Honourable Zulfikar Ally, and the Minister within the Ministry of Agriculture, the Honourable Vickash Ramkisson, also attended the Outreach.
