His Excellency President Dr Irfaan Ali met with residents of Leguan during a recent Cabinet Outreach.
During the engagement, he outlined several new initiatives aimed at improving life on the island.
High on the agenda is the expansion of healthcare services with a new hospital extention for maternal, dental and laboratory care. This will be supported by monthly visits from specialist doctors.
Plans are also in place to set up a mechanism for the Ministry of Agriculture to purchase all available cattle once per month and to invest in cleaning canals and drains, while enhancing the irrigation systems to provide rice farmers with water storage facilities.
The President also highlighted ongoing investments in infrastructure, noting that more than $2 billion has been spent on Leguan’s development over the past five years.
He said that the newly commissioned 0.60-megawatt grid-forming solar photovoltaic (PV) farm on the island is also expected to reduce the cost of electricity for residents from the first quarter of 2026.
