His Excellency President Dr Irfaan Ali said that his Government will replace all the old vessels transporting residents between regions to ensure that there is an enhancement of long‑distance water service in Guyana.
During a tour of the new ferry Kalliopi N, which will serve the Georgetown to Region One route, the Head of State spoke of the need for collective development.
“Incrementally, over the next three years, we will also be looking at replacing all the old vessels, so we can have the same level of service in all the regions.”
President Ali highlighted the modern features and robust nature of Kalliopi N, which sailed under its own power from Greece to Guyana.
He said that the ferry, built in 2024, was “designed for Region One” and should help to enhance travel to the region.
The vessel is equipped with the requisite state‑of‑the‑art features which includes GPS, Automatic Identification System (AIS), Electronic Chart Display & Information System (ECDIS), Radar, and Safety and Communication System among other key instruments.
It is also equipped with three Hyundai engines and two generators that are expected to significantly reduce travel time between Georgetown and Region One. It has a seating capacity of 284 persons and can carry 51 cars or 14 trucks.
Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation, the Honourable Deodat Indar was also part of the visit.
