His Excellency President Dr Irfaan Ali described the newly commissioned 11.63-kilometre Ogle-to-Eccles highway as a defining symbol of Guyana’s ambitious national transformation, stating that the thoroughfare reflects not only improved mobility, but a deliberate strategy to unlock economic expansion through infrastructure-led development.

“This road is part of something much bigger, much grander, much more consequential,” the Head of State emphasised on Monday evening during the commissioning ceremony. “It is not fundamentally about traffic management—it is about opportunity, interconnectivity, and transformation.”

Constructed through a line of credit from the Government of India with support from the Government of Guyana, the highway connects the East Coast to the East Bank of Demerara, and in the coming months to West Demerara via the new Demerara River Bridge.

With the extension of the Heroes Highway all the way to Soesdyke in the not-too-distant future, Guyana is poised to dramatically improve travel time across key economic and residential corridors.

The President announced that the new corridor is projected to spur over US$500 million in private sector investments, facilitating manufacturing, industrial expansion and new residential developments.

“It’s a bold declaration that Guyana is on the move—not by chance, not by accident, but by deliberate action,” President Ali added.

He highlighted that roads are not just about movement, but serve as catalysts for opportunity—enhancing access to markets for farmers and fishermen, reducing travel time, and supporting equitable access to education and healthcare services.

The highway integrates smart traffic management systems, including speed monitors and real-time commuter updates, to support the rollout of Guyana’s e-ticketing framework. According to the President, such features position the country on a path toward smart, sustainable urban mobility.

“This is not an isolated project—it is one piece of a larger puzzle, part of a national vision anchored in strategic infrastructure,” he declared.
