Georgetown, Guyana – (November 8, 2019) First Lady, Mrs. Sandra Granger, this morning, said that in striving to achieve one’s highest potential, a woman’s first focus should be knowing her inherent value which will build confidence, and not on outward appearances.
Mrs. Granger made these statements in her feature address at the Junshazyna’s (JSZ) World of Fashion’s one-day Fashion Stylist and Makeover Seminar, which was held under the theme “Discover the power of knowing how to Dress”. The seminar was held at the Arthur Chung Convention Centre (ACCC), Turkeyen, East Coast Demerara.
In her address to the participants, the First Lady acknowledged that women want to look good and feel even better.
“But I wish to suggest we women look and feel our best when we know our value. We need first to recognize our intrinsic value – that special something that makes each one of us special and unique, with our own God-given talents, secure in the knowledge that no one else on earth can occupy this space at this time, before we can become truly confident. Then we can think of how we grow that value so that we can achieve our highest potential,” the First Lady said.
She commended JSZ’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mrs. Junette Stuart for conceptualizing and organizing the seminar, which she described as a tall but highly commendable order.
Among the objectives of the seminar was to educate women on how to identify clothing styles for their body shapes; professional dress ethics and proper application of makeup based on skin tone. It was also held to raise the bar on professional dress in Guyana through training and mentoring.
“Junette wants us to dress appropriately from the skin out and to help us to understand our body types so that know what clothing works for us, pairing this with makeup and accessories. I guess we will learn from this seminar when to grab the [spandex]; how to choose between ballet flats, strappy sandals with ice pick heels and court shoes; and how to accent a dress or tone down the bling,” the First Lady said.
The First Lady added that “As we discover the power of knowing how to dress, as we put on the amour of success through the offerings of this seminar; let us nourish the lamp within us so that we recognize and relish our worth as human beings and as strong, self-confident daughters, sisters, aunts, wives, mothers and grandmothers.”
Later, during an interactive session, the First Lady reflected on her own personal struggles with dress codes, which were implemented by Government institutions. She recounted that those codes outlined what was deemed to be acceptable attire for female visitors and she then questioned the origin of those guidelines.
Meanwhile, JSZ Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mrs. Junette Stuart, in an invited comment, said the interactive event aimed at having participants reflect on their styles and to provide to expert advice on beauty and fashion.
Presentations were also made on topics such as ‘Discovering personal styles’ by Ms. Sharon Hudson; ‘What is your body structure/ Do you wear the right size?’ by Ms. Pamela Dillion; ‘Religious dressing and cultural wear’ by Mrs. Han Granger-Gaskin and ‘Choosing Makeup for your skin tone’ by Ms. Sherry Ann Dixon. The event also featured an exhibition by local designers and manufactures.
