Georgetown, Guyana – (April 17, 2019) Minister of Citizenship, Mr. Winston Felix, yesterday, said that Ministerial outreaches are an important aspect of Government’s business as it aids in understanding the gaps in Government services. The Minister made these remarks at a community meeting with New Amsterdam residents at the Vryman’s Erven Secondary School. The meeting was part of the wider ‘Bringing the Government to the People’ initiative held in East Berbice-Corentyne (Region Six).
Minister Felix said that while the Government has implemented programmes and decentralised a number of services to ensure ease of access for all residents, there is still more to be done.
“This Government has positive and solid achievements… but those achievements I am going to admit to you, don’t touch all the areas of need and that is why we are constantly on outreaches; to see where we have slipped, where we have missed, and how we can recover from those slips and misses,” he said.
He noted that since the coalition Government’s assumption to office in 2015, it has been hosting outreach exercises in the region to address challenges that were hampering citizens’ ability to have a good life.
“We have come to New Amsterdam on housing issues, land issues, street light issues, and we have had some positive responses to these issues,” he said, adding that soon his Department will be operationalising its services in the region.
“Whether it be citizenship issues, birth certificate issues, land issues, [or] house issues, many people’s issues were solved as a result of this outreach,” he said.
Mayor of New Amsterdam, Her Worship, Winifred Heywood and Deputy Mayor, Mr. Wainwright Mcintosh also attended the meeting.
Other members of the ministerial team, which travelled to the region to meet with residents to address their concerns were Minister of State, Mr. Joseph Harmon and Minister of Public Affairs, Mrs. Dawn Hastings-Williams.
