Georgetown, Guyana – (October 26, 2017) The Ministry of Social Cohesion with the responsibility for Culture, Youth and Sport handed over a $19 Million cheque to the Regional Executive Officer of Region Five, Mr. Ovid Morrison for five community grounds in the region to be enhanced. The presentation was made yesterday at a Ministry’s sensitisation session held at the Blairmont Primary School, in Mahaica-Berbice (Region Five). The grounds earmarked for rehabilitation are the Lovely Lass Community Ground, Seafield Community Ground, Blairmont Community Ground, Ithaca Ground and the Paradise West Coast Community Ground.
Social Cohesion Technical Officer for Regions Five and Six, Ms. Natasha Singh urged the beneficiaries to ensure that the facilities are properly maintained after the rehabilitation works are completed. The technical officer said that this initiative came in response to a request made by villagers and athletes and it is a demonstration of Minister George Norton’s commitment to the Region.
“Lovely Lass landfilling for grounds, construction and repairs of gate for fence and gate and a construction of one bleacher $4 Million; Paradise West Coast Berbice Community ground construction of concrete fence $8 Million; Seafield Community Ground construction of two bleachers $3 Million; Blairmont repairs and maintenance works of sports club pavilion, in filling and land filling works to the playground $ Million, Ithaca, fencing for the basketball court and construction of one bleacher $2 Million,” Ms. Singh Lewis outlined.
Regional Executive Officer, Mr. Ovid Morrison said that he was pleased with the generosity of the government and ensured that when the grounds have completed their rehabilitation works the sports which is a vehicle of social cohesion will be used to unify persons in region five. “Sports is a vital part of the vehicle by which we can use to achieve cohesion because the young people who are involved in sports would be able to further bring together the collective understanding of each other’s culture, behavioural patterns…” Mr. Morrison said.
Meanwhile during the sensitisation sessions, Ms. Singh Lewis urged the residents to live in harmony as she highlighted the Government’s vision of a cohesive society. “Our vision for a social cohesive society is one where diversities are embraced, conflicts are resolved, networks and collaborations with stakeholders are strengthened, equity is promoted and decision making processes results in equal opportunities and benefits for all,” Ms. Singh Lewis said.
She further noted that in order for social cohesion to be achieved everyone must embrace diversity; noting that the differences that people have in terms of race, ethnicity, religion and geographical structure should not matter, instead, it serve to make individuals stronger.
She also assured residents of the Region that the Ministry of Social Cohesion will work along with the Neighbourhood Democratic Council, the Regional Democratic Council and Youth groups to achieve not only cohesive society but a developed one.
