Georgetown, Guyana – (August 9, 2017) First Lady, Mrs. Sandra Granger, today, facilitated a visit and guided tour of State House for 26 teenage girls from the Girl Stand Up Project. Project Director of Girl Stand Up, Ms. Collette Venture said that she requested the tour because she knew that it would be an excellent opportunity for the teenagers to meet the First Lady.
“We think of the First Lady as a woman, who can empower the young girls. She is a strong lady and she is a good role model and can be a good mentor; someone that the girls could look up to. So we thought that it would be a good idea to bring the girls here to meet someone whom they can look up to, who can provide words of encouragement to let them know to follow their dreams and [that] they can do anything that they set their heart to do,” she said.
At the close of the tour, the visiting team, which also included six organisers, presented the First Lady with a token of appreciation and one of the teenagers, Ms. Gabrielle Allen performed a moving rendition of popular gospel artists Mary Mary’s “Can’t give up now”.
The Girl Stand Up Project is planned and executed by the non-profit organisation, Impacting Communities, Changing Lives. Its directors and organisers hail from Linden, Upper Demerara-Berbice (Region Ten) and, together with other supporters in Guyana, the United States and Canada help provide confidence-building and educational sessions for girls. The Project serves girls ages 14 to 17 from the Linden community.
