Georgetown, Guyana – (July 12, 2017) Minister of Social Cohesion, Dr. George Norton, today, called on stakeholders in Cuyuni-Mazaruni (Region Seven) to work together to build unified communities, with the view of fostering national unity. The Minister made these remarks during his address at the sensitisation meeting for stakeholders from various bodies including the Mayor and Town Council, the religious community, youth representatives and the armed forces. The event was held at the Palm Springs, Hotel, Bartica. Regional Chairman, Mr. Gordon Bradford and Mayor, Mr. Gifford Marshall also attended the meeting.
In his address, Minister Norton said that every individual has a part to play in the process of social cohesion.

“Social Cohesion cuts across every sector and each of you has a role to play in fostering unity in your respective fields and collectively as communities. This requires working in tandem with each other to ensure that any gaps which may exist along the way are bridged,” he said.

The Minister also noted that every community represents a piece of the Social Cohesion puzzle and as such it is important that they embrace diversities, cultivate relationships and collaborate. “It is time for us to embrace our differences and utilize them to push us forward on the Social Cohesion trajectory instead of letting them divide us. We must let peace and harmony prevail and work together to realise the vision of a unified Guyana,” he said.

Stakeholders welcomed the forum and expressed the view that Bartica is a perfect representation of the multi-cultural mosaic that is the Guyanese society.
