Georgetown, Guyana – (May 29, 2017) First Lady, Mrs. Sandra Granger, yesterday morning, joined former national athlete, Mrs. Burgess Williams-Forde and members of the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) to fire the starting pistol at the beginning of the 5km and 10km road races on Carifesta Avenue.

In an invited comment, Mrs. Burgess Williams-Forde, who part sponsored the event, said that it is her desire to be able give back to her country and further create avenues for young athletes that were afforded to her as a young athlete. “[This race] is one way to remember an organisation that came in and went out. The Guyana National Service has done so much for young people; including people like me… the GNS was a door for us… To remember that name it’s a humbling experience; to remember where we came from and where we’re going,” Mrs. Williams-Forde said.

The race is expected to be an annual event for the organisers in observance of Guyana’s Independence anniversary and has garnered the support of athletes and several organisations across the country.
