Georgetown, Guyana – (May 12, 2017) First Lady, Mrs. Sandra Granger, this afternoon, urged the Guyana Dental Association to make their footprint more visible through high standards of professionalism and continuous education.
The First Lady, who was invited to speak to the members of the Association at its monthly meeting, said that high standards of professionalism are needed, particularly in the medical field and it is therefore incumbent on the Association to ensure that it delivers this quality of service to the Guyanese public. One aspect of improving professionalism she said, is the pursuit of continuous education.
“You are looking for professional recognition but you also need to focus on national and international recognition for this Association. It is also important that you consider continuous educational development. There are new technologies, new information, new pharmaceuticals coming out every day so I think that it is important that you keep updating your education,” she said.
In addition to that, Mrs. Granger also encouraged the members of the Association to work on improving their membership, promote attendance at professional conferences and to plan community outreach programmes to educate and interact with the ordinary Guyanese.
“This not only makes the organisation and members more visible but it’s also facilitates networking with other professionals. You need to start planting your feet firmly so that people can get to know you and respect you,” she said.

Dr. Sen Gupta, President of the Guyana Dental Association, in an invited comment, said that the First Lady was invited to speak to the members since she is considered an experienced professional.
“I consider her a great presenter and so we invited her to speak to our members who are young to let the know how things are done at the highest level and the most professional manner and what she had to say exemplified exactly that. All around the world it is an absolute requirement and condition of registration as a medical professional or any professional to maintain and keep up with your continued education. It is an expectation if you are going to be taking care of the public and to be up to date with all of the techniques, equipment and methods,” he said.
Dr. Pradesh Harry, treasurer of the Association, in an invited comment, echoed similar sentiments, noting that the First Lady’s advice will go a far way in assisting the organisation to better promote its image.
“We will be working towards implementing some of the ideas that she has shared with us to ensure that the standard is increased across the board,” he said.
