Georgetown, Guyana – (May 12, 2017) First Lady, Mrs. Sandra Granger, this afternoon, commended the graduates of the First Aid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and the use of the Automated External Defibrillator (AED) training workshop for completing the programme and equipping themselves with a lifelong skill. The closing ceremony of the workshop was held at the Guyana Red Cross Society (GRCS) in Kingston, Georgetown.
“I want to congratulate you and to thank you for staying the course and completing the workshop on caring for the elderly … for giving yourself a skill that you can put to good use all of your lives,” Mrs. Granger said.
Meanwhile, General Secretary of the GRCS, Mrs. Dorothy Fraser said the founder of the Red Cross would be pleased with the enthusiasm and discipline displayed by the participants during the workshop. “When Henry Dunant thought of forming the Red Cross around the world it was to have people like yourself… I think that he would be really pleased to know that his work continues. You all come from such a variety of backgrounds, of ages, of interest, and that’s not always an easy thing to manage, but what was evident from day one was that… you found a way of giving support to each other,” she said.
Ms. Fraser also said that the CRGS would provide training in psychological first aid for graduates from today’s programme.

Several of the graduates expressed gratitude to the First Lady for sponsoring this workshop, which was part of the component of the ‘Care for the Elderly’ workshop, which was also sponsored by her office. In an invited comment, Ms. Joyann Hannays said, “This is the second course that I’ve completed through the First Lady’s [programmes] and both are important in [my field] … I never really thought that programmes like these exist, the experience was great.”
Ms. Makeiza LaRose expressed similar sentiments. “I have completed the First Aid [course] and I’m so happy [that] I’ve completed my second course. First I did the ‘Care for the Elderly’ successfully and [now] I’ve … passed the First Aid … I would like to thank the First Lady for giving me the opportunity and to everyone else for their support,” she said.
GRCS First Aid Coordinator, Mr. Devaughn Lewis, GRCS Instructor/Trainer Mr. Ewin Enmore and Trainer Ms. Andrea Phillips also attended the closing ceremony.
