Georgetown, Guyana – (July 26, 2016) President David Granger is deeply saddened to learn of the accident, which resulted in injuries to two Cub Scouts from St. Lucia, who are in Guyana for the 14th Caribbean Cuboree. The accident, which occurred on Woolford Avenue, left eight year old Nick Josh Omari Joseph and nine year old Darnell Ajani Matthew injured. They have both been admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC), where their conditions are being carefully monitored and medical care is being provided.
The President, who was in Cabinet when he learned of the accident, ordered that the Childcare and Protection Agency of the Ministry of Social Protection provide counselling services to the 700 remaining Cub Scouts from across the region, many of whom witnessed the accident. A team of three counsellors was immediately dispatched to the Scout Association of Guyana on Woolford Avenue.
First Lady, Mrs. Sandra Granger, who had just spoken to the group during their morning session and had only just left when the accident occurred, immediately rushed to the GPHC on learning of the unfortunate event and spent sometime at the bedsides of both children, as well as speaking with the medical team, President of the Scouts Association of Guyana, Mr. Ramsey Ali and members of the Saint Lucia Scout Association. Minister within the Ministry of Education, Mrs. Nicolette Henry was also present.
President Granger commends the doctors at the GPHC for the care being provided to the two boys and prays for a full and quick recovery. The President also extends words of comfort to the members of the Saint Lucia Scout Association, the Scout Association of Guyana and all the other Cub Scouts in Guyana for the Cuboree. The driver of the vehicle involved in the accident remains in custody as the Guyana Police Force conducts its investigations.
