Georgetown, Guyana – (June 9, 2016) Cabinet approved Guyana’s participation in a joint Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO)/Government of the Swiss Confederation regional workshop aimed at strengthening food safety systems in Panama City, Panama from June 14-16, 2016.

Dr. Mark Pierre of the Ministry of the Agriculture will be attending the ‘Implementing the Codex Alimentarius Knowledge Base to Strengthen Food Safety Systems in countries from the Latin America and the Caribbean Region (LAC)’.

The food safety capacity building workshop is organised by the FAO Regional Office for LAC and Switzerland in close collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Codex Committee for Latin America and the Caribbean (CCLAC) Coordinator Chile. The primary objective of the three-day seminar is to strengthen food safety systems of CCLAC countries.

The Codex Alimentarius or “Food Code” was established by the FAO and the WHO in 1963 to develop harmonised international food standards, which protect consumer health and promote fair practices in food trade.

Financial support for Guyana’s participation in the workshop is provided by the Government of the Swiss Confederation.
