Georgetown, Guyana – (December 2, 2015) Minister of State, Joseph Harmon, announced earlier today, that government has reinstated the tax-free overtime concession for bauxite workers, which was cut by the former administration in 2007.
“In 1988, Bauxite workers were granted tax free concessions on overtime work. These concessions were being enjoyed by workers until 2007 when they were arbitrarily taken away by the previous administration. This withdrawal adversely affected the earnings of bauxite workers, mainly in Linden and Kwakwani and was seen as a punitive exercise, so this is us correcting that situation,” Harmon said, in his post-Cabinet press briefing, held at the Ministry of the Presidency.
Women to access Industrial and Survivors’ Benefits
In addition to this, government has consented to amend legislation barring women from accessing Industrial and Survivors’ Benefits under the National Insurance Scheme’s Social Security Benefits Regulations.
“These amendments will be made in the National Assembly shortly for consideration…. What it will do is that it will ensure equal industrial survivors’ benefits for men and women employees under the NIS,” Harmon said.
