Georgetown, Guyana – (September 4, 2015) Minister of State, Joseph Harmon today announced Cabinet’s approval for the appointment of certain boards in the publication sector. These include: The Guyana National Newspapers Limited (GNNL), National Communications Network (NCN) and the Guyana Broadcasting Authority (GNBA).
Speaking at his weekly post-Cabinet press briefing, the Minister said that Mrs. Jean La Rose has been identified as the new chairperson for GNNL, Mr. Bishwa Panday for NCN and Mr. Leonard Craig for the GNBA.
These appointments will become official once they are gazetted in the Official Gazette, which is expected to be done shortly.
Meanwhile, as per procedure, chairpersons will be selected for the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA) and the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) when their respective board of directors meet.
The Minister was also asked why Minister of Finance, Winston Jordan’s appointment as the chairman of the National Industrial and Commercial Investments Limited (NICIL) was withdrawn. In his response, he explained that this step was taken based on the request of the Minister Jordan himself.
“He felt that he could not be exercising ministerial supervisory control over entities and still be sitting on a board which was expected to be independent and give advice. He did not feel that he should be advising himself by sitting as the Minister…He felt that it was in the best interest of transparency,” Minister Harmon said.
He added that the new Administration is resolute on doing business in a more open and transparent manner as opposed to what obtained in the past. The position of chairman of NICIL has since been awarded to Dr. Maurice Odle.
