Georgetown, Guyana – (September 7, 2015) The Government of Guyana, in conjunction with the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) and the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA), has signaled its intention to donate a 20 foot container of rice to the Eastern Caribbean Island of Dominica.
The donation comes at a time when Dominica is still in distress mode after the recent passage of Tropical Storm, Erika, which left the island ravaged and counting its losses.
Minister of State, with responsibility for Disaster Preparedness Management, Joseph Harmon, today made the announcement at the Civil Defense Headquarters, Thomas Lands.
Minister Harmon said that Guyana’s response is well-timed since it is based on a “correct needs analysis of what is currently required in the Tropical Storm ravaged country”.
He emphasised that Guyana’s donation is a “measured response, and one which has been made after careful consideration of what is required by Dominica in their time of distress”. The Minister added that Guyana will deliver items to the country, which are most needed and which will be of immeasurable help to the citizens of Dominica.
It is expected that within the next few days, the Civil Defence Commission will make the necessary arrangements in place for that container of rice to be delivered to the people of Dominica.
Meanwhile, the Government of Guyana continues to sympathise with the Government and the people of Dominica for lives and property lost during the storm.
