Georgetown, Guyana – (October 17, 2018) President David Granger, yesterday, said the church has a role to play in fostering equality, by encouraging respect not only in terms of race but also gender.
“We have to treat and love our neighbours as we love ourselves,” the President said as he pointed to the Biblical commandment of “Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself”.
The Head of State was at the time addressing members of the religious community in Linden, Upper Demerara-Berbice (Region Ten) at a Prayer breakfast held at the Watooka Guest house, McKenzie.
President Granger who was accompanied by Minister of Social Protection, Ms. Amna Ally and Minister within the Ministry of Communities, Mrs. Valerie Adams-Yearwood said there is a link between the Christian concept of the ‘the Kingdom of God’ to the political concept of ‘the good life’.
Moreover, the President emphasized the need for there to be equality so that poverty can be reduced and ultimately eliminated.
“You have to accept equality if you are a Christian and equally, you have to accept that all citizens are entitled to equal access: access to education, health, transport [to name a few] …” he stated.
The President, noted too that through access to equal education, the walls of discrimination and inequality will be broken down.
Eventually, President Granger said society will become more equal so that there will not be extremes of poverty and extremes of wealth. “From childhood people have to get accustom to the whole concept of equality…” said the Head of State who noted that ‘the good life’ can only be realized through equality.
As such, the Head of State made it clear that the Church has an important role to play in the transformation of the mind-sets of society and ultimately Guyana’s transformation.
