President receives French Ambassador
-France looking to establish good relations with Guyana

Georgetown, GINA, April 9, 2008

France is looking to broaden its relations with Guyana since these relations have thus far been minute. This is according to French Ambassador to Guyana, His Excellency Richard Barbeyron who presented his credentials to President Bharrat Jagdeo today at the Office of the President.  
            The Ambassador noted that with Guyana hosting the upcoming Caribbean Festival of Arts (CARIFESTA X) and with a number of French speaking countries participating such as Martinique and Guadeloupe and French Guiana, it is a good start for France to establish good relations with Guyana. He added that the countries’ strong cultural policies can open many doors.
           “A lot of bridges are being built between Brazil and Guyana and we have to build more bridges between us. This region will soon be moving to integrate more, there’d be more regional trade, there’d be more provisions, and France and Guyana have to follow this tendency,” the Ambassador said.
            He explained that his intention is to holds talks with Guyana’s Government to identify some areas which the two countries can work together on.                      
            Ambassador Barbeyron who is fluent in English, Spanish and French holds a Bachelor’s degree in Law as well as a diploma in Business Administration. He is ranked as senior Counsellor for Foreign Affairs in his country.
            The Ambassador was the recipient of honours as Knight of the Legion of Honour and Knight of the National Order of Merit.
            He previously served in various prestigious positions including Consul-General in Chicago from 2004-2007, Second Counsellor at the French Embassy in Port-au-Prince, Haiti from 1995-1998 and First Secretary at the French Embassy in Caracas, Venezuela from 1991-1995.
