GUY EXPO 2004

Cabinet highly commended Minister Nadir and the organisers of the GUY EXPO 2004.

Cabinet noted the overwhelming response by exhibitors and patrons alone who all contributed to making this exhibition the biggest and most memorable.

Obviously the successfully held event has lessons for the future and Cabinet accepted the logical conclusion that the site must now be fully and properly upgraded to fulfil its role as the premier exhibition site, maybe even a permanent exhibition site in Guyana .

GRENADA : GUYANESE RESPONSE

The Government has followed up on its commitment to relocate Guyanese by Cabinet indicating that a one-way special evacuation flight would be provided for Guyanese desiring relocation.

Cabinet also instructed the Minister of Education to finalise arrangements for the Educational system to accommodate contingent of Grenadian CAPE students at its 6 th form level.

Guyanese families willing to offer accommodation and other necessary facilities to these students are asked to indicate their willingness to either the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the Civil Defence Commission.

LOCAL GOVERNMENT ELECTIONS

Cabinet, at its meeting of September 28, 2004, agreed to legislative steps to postpone elections in 2004.

This foregone conclusion has its genesis in a number of factors principal among which is the deliberate and consistent foot dragging by the Opposition PNCR.

With regards to the Elections Commission, the PNCR has continued its time honoured hyper critical and obstructionist course since 1997.

Recall the legal challenges to declared results, even the legal challenge based on their rejection of the of co-engineered Voters ID card requirements.

Recall the PNC proposed handling of the Voters List issue in 1997, 2001 and now today its repetition in their tortuous rejection like positions on the database.

Since their preoccupation and fixation with Executive Power Sharing, the PNCR has made less and less commitment to elections and understandably so since their Executive Power Sharing proposal is their way of beating the ballot.

It is thus no surprise that the PNCR has deadlocked the Task Force, addressing the new Electoral System.

A close examination of their extremist positions on the Local Government Electoral Systems reveals the lengths the PNCR intends to go to frustrate early Local Government Elections.

Their fixation on Single Member Constituencies is obvious because it leads to an extensive demarcation exercise for NDCs and Municipalities again leading to more delays.

Their actions only make sense if they intend to put Executive Power Sharing on the front burner, a position publicly championed and fully endorsed by their recent Congress.
